I love helping students unlock what music means to them. Each student comes with their own strengths, interests, and learning styles, and together we design a custom musical pathway—so they can cultivate confidence and focus. Although I have taught students ages 3 to 70, I am particularly drawn to working with teens and adults to help them expand their life experiences through music.

In my studio, students play works by Bartok, Satie, Liszt, Granados, and Chopin. Beyond classical repertoire, I also teach students how to improvise on their favorite pop songs, everything from by Adele and Maroon 5 to Broadway musical show tunes such as Hadestown and Wicked. Students also explore ensemble collaboration, family duet performances, and more.

My students’ successes include winning first prizes in the International Grande Music Competition, the BMTG Intercontinental Competition, and being named to the Honors Program at The Piano Teachers Congress of New York. Others have been accepted into the undergraduate music programs at NYU and Eastman School of Music. In addition, some of my high-school students have written and produced original songs using Logic Pro and published them on music streaming services. I am so proud of what ALL of my students achieve.

To celebrate their learning, we present biannual concerts that help foster our supportive studio community. In addition, families often offer to host these concerts at their homes to make the events even more memorable.

Ultimately, I teach to help students find joy in expressing themselves and making their own personal connection with music.

I am a violin and viola teacher from New York and a registered member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. I am an active performer of contemporary and classical music, and my commitment is to instill my students with both a passion for playing music and an outstanding technical foundation.

My teaching method is tailored to each student's individual learning style and motivation for playing. The first question I will ask at every first lesson is: what music do you love? This can be one song - a nursery rhyme, classical melody, or popular song - or a genre of music. Regardless of age, I believe that the most effective path for learning violin or viola is to start with the music!

For younger children, I suggest beginning with the Suzuki method in order to establish strong musical and technical fundamentals. The Suzuki curriculum is also popular across many music programs in New York, so it provides beginning violinists an opportunity to play music with their peers. For adolescents and adults, I place an earlier emphasis on designing a curriculum based on their musical interests, with equal focus devoted to technique. I also teach improvisation at the beginning stages to all students to encourage free musical expression.

Drew Robertson began his musical studies at age four on the piano, and began studying viola at age seven. His principal teachers were Leslie VanBecker, principal violist of the Grand Rapids Symphony and Mark Jackobs of the Cleveland Orchestra. He studied viola performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), music therapy at Nazareth College, and Dalcroze Eurythmics at the Eastman School of Music. Drew has performed with the CIM orchestras, Lab Orchestra, CIM Baroque Ensemble, Firelands Symphony Orchestra, and currently performs with the Genesee Symphony Orchestra, among other ensembles. He has performed in masterclasses with acclaimed teachers such as Peter Slowik, Yizhak Schotten, Pamela Goldsmith, and Jeffery Irvine. Drew has participated in festivals including the Pilsen Music Festival in the Czech Republic and the renowned Tanglewood Institute. A performing teacher, Drew frequently plays solo recitals, outreach concerts, and chamber concerts.

Since founding and performing with the award-winning Kalliope String Quartet, Drew has been an avid teacher and advocate for musical entrepreneurship and chamber music. In addition to playing countless gigs and concerts as a violist or violinist, Drew coaches chamber ensembles and leads chamber music masterclasses. Drew's passion is not only to inspire musical excellence in his students, but also to endow students with useful life skills such as professionalism, dedication, business acumen, and entrepreneurship.
